Inspire! are excited to be working in partnership with the Francis Crick Institute for the second year running, managing work experience placements for young Camden residents and students.

Founded in honour of scientist Francis Crick, the Institute is dedicated to biomedical discovery, undertaking ground-breaking research into disease prevention and cures. Having moved into a new state-of-the-art building near St Pancras Station in 2016, the work experience programme is one way the centre is adding value to the local Camden community.

Last year, Inspire! helped to ensure that state school students across the Borough were able to access this invaluable opportunity, brokering placements for 14-19 year olds. Students were invited to apply for a wide range of disciplines, with budding scientists aged 16-19 able to get involved in scientific research, and opportunities to experience work beyond the lab for younger students and those with alternate interests.

The placements offered young people a unique insight into the day-to-day running of a research centre, as well as an understanding of the skills needed to succeed at work. “I understand more about my choices in life and my new found passion for biology and chemistry” said a student from William Ellis School after undertaking a placement, whilst another from Westminster Kingsway College learnt that “a positive attitude is a key foundation of employability.”

This year Inspire! will be managing placements outside of laboratories for 14-19 year olds, working with the Crick to increase and improve the range of opportunities offered. This could include assisting in education events as part of the Public Engagement team, helping a lab to run smoothly as a Laboratory Administrator, or developing tech skills as part of the IT team.
