Celebrating Success: 100 Teachers Reached by City CSR
After 3 years, in which it reached more than 100 local teachers, curriculum enrichment programme Subjects in the City has come to an end. The programme, funded by the City of London Corporation and developed by Inspire!, paired teachers with volunteers from City businesses, encouraging them to learn more about City careers, develop shareable lesson plans and resources linked to real-world City scenarios and bring the curriculum to life.
At the Celebration Event, held at The City Centre on Thursday 13th October, business volunteers from companies including Freshfields Bruckhaus Deringer, Deutsche Bank and Sapient shared their experience of the programme. Matthew Maxwell, Creative Director at Sapient, demonstrated the enterprise project his team developed with St Paul's Way Trust School. Matthew said, “As a company in the digital tech space, we need to make sure young people have the right skills to work with us in the future; it’s in our interests to support local young people to develop the skills we need.”
The programme paired teachers from the ‘City fringe’ boroughs – Hackney, Camden, Islington, Tower Hamlets, Southwark and Lambeth – with City volunteers. At last night’s event, attendees explained some of the many ways in which they have benefited from the project describing the project as “positive”, “bridge-building” and a great way to “embed careers into curriculum teaching”.
“This is what partnership working in the education-business sector is all about,” said Jonny Boux, Director of Inspire!. “Subjects in the City may have come to an end, but we encourage any business interested in similar programmes to get in touch with us to see how we can work together and keep bringing lessons to life for young people.”
