Offer a Work Experience Placement

Vets work experience placement

Each year hundreds of students are eager to experience the world of work by taking on a work experience placement at a business or organisation. Work experience gives the student practical experience and knowledge of the workplace.

What do young people gain from work experience?

  • Increased motivation in and understanding of the relevance of education
  • A more developed understanding of the world of work and particular occupational areas
  • Career direction
  • Improved employability
  • A sense of achievement and satisfaction
  • The opportunity to learn skills from an adult role model

“I learnt how to use my initiative and to be more independent. I think it was a very good experience.”

What can a work experience student bring to my organisation?

  • Enthusiasm and energy to complete tasks and projects
  • Fresh ideas and a new perspective on your business
  • An in-depth knowledge of the youth market - keeping you a step ahead!
  • They often bring up-to-date computer skills

"Students bring new ideas, local knowledge and enthusiasm"

Work experience host

How can my organisation benefit by hosting a work experience student?

By hosting a work experience student you can benefit from some extra help, while helping to shape the workforce of tomorrow and giving back to your local community. Your business or organisation can also benefit in other ways:

  • Increased employee motivation and management and supervision skills
  • A raised profile among potential customers and the wider community
  • Access to new recruitment channels and potential future employees
  • Work experience students can give you new perspectives and ideas

"It helps to boost the confidence of staff in their roles when appointed to mentor, supervise and share their knowledge and experience with the students.”

Is my business or organisation suitable?

For your business or organisation to offer a work experience placement, you need Employers’ Liability insurance and your workplace must be a safe environment for a student. You must also be able to provide support and supervision for a student.

How will my organisation be supported?

If you decide to offer a work experience placement, Inspire! will support you every step of the way.

  • We will help you identify appropriate tasks and create a simple job description
  • We will carry out health and safety checks
  • We will offer you guidance and advice on how best to support your student throughout the placement

How long is a placement?

These placements can range from a two week placement to extended placements, where students may work with an organisation for one or two days a week over a few weeks or months.
